Podcasts are sort of like the new books on tape for me. I love listening to them in the car, while I’m doing household chores, when I’m walking, when I’m vegging out… whenever I have a minute to listen, I do! I’m so obsessed, in fact, that I talk to anyone and everyone about the ones I’m listening to, and of course I have to ask if there’s a new one I need to add to my list. I’m not even sorry about peer pressuring all my pals into listening too so I have someone to discuss it with!
Since I can’t stop talking about them, it’s only natural I blog about it, right? I’m rounding up my (current) favorites to share with you, and of course, ask you if I’m missing any!
My Favorite Podcasts
Current Obsession: My Favorite Murder
This podcast came highly recommended to me, and I’m so mad at myself for procrastinating and not listening the minute I heard about it. Now I’m behind, and because I prefer to listen to podcasts in order from the beginning, I’m still listening frantically trying to catch up. What can I say, people binge tv shows, I binge podcasts!
True crime is extremely popular right now, and the two absolutely hilarious women who host the show somehow make murder less terrifying. I find myself laughing out loud during each episode — I always feel like I’m listening to two of my best friends banter. Besides being obsessed with murder (I mean, who among us isn’t), they are open and honest about their past addictions and current mental health status. I promise it’s funnier than I made it sound!
If you haven’t started this podcast, you definitely should. Then we can talk about it!
Mystery Solved: Up & Vanished
Season one of Up & Vanished was unique in that it was a cold case that was solved while it was being recorded. This one is not nearly light-hearted as MFM, but Payne Lindsey is a great story teller and I was hooked from start to finish. I haven’t started Season 2 yet, but I am really, really looking forward to it!
The One That Started It All: Serial
Serial was actually the very first podcast I ever listened to, and one of the only ones I listen to in “real time” rather than binging. Season one was so incredible that pretty much everyone in America (except Kim Kardashian, famously) listened to it. I liked season two as well, but not nearly as much as the first one — it was one of the best seasons of a podcast pretty much ever. The good news is season THREE just started — so jump on board if you haven’t already!
If you’re like me and couldn’t get enough after the first season, listen to Undisclosed as it takes a deeper dive into Serial. It’s a little technical, but if you want to get to the bottom of, “Did he or didn’t he?” (he didn’t) I think it’s worth the listen.
Old Faithful: This American Life
If I’m ever on a road trip with someone who doesn’t listen to “my” podcasts, this is my first go to. It’s actually a proven fact that it’s impossible to dislike This American Life. That’s just science!
Quick and Easy: S-town
From the teams that brought us Serial and This American Life, the critically-acclaimed S-Town is unlike any other podcast I’ve ever listened to. The best thing about this podcast for me is that it’s only one season. You’ll be finished before you know it!
Up Next On My List
The Know It All: Armchair Expert
I have had several friends suggest Dax Shepard’s Armchair Expert podcast. From what I hear, he’s an amazing and thoughtful interviewer who makes you think as much as he makes you laugh. As soon as I’m up to date on MFM — and I’m already caught up to June of this year! — this is the next one I’m going to dive head first into.
Keep It Local: Museum Confidential
The Philbrook Museum of Art is practically in my neighborhood, and I couldn’t be more thrilled with all the cool events and exhibits they’ve been hosting over the last few years. They do weekly burger nights and movies on the lawn, but I’m most excited about Museum Confidential, Philbrook’s own podcast. The series shares tons of amazing history and fascinating secrets about the art and the building itself.
These are all my current favorites! Is there something you think I’m missing out on that I would love? What are you listening to right now??
